Washmere’s Farm

September 12, 2016 by Ben Smith

Background

An existing 1960s bungalow did not respond to the views across the countryside and visually it was of little merit. It contributed very little to the quality of the Green Belt and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Design

The single, open plan living space where you enter is situated on the upper ground floor and  contains the cooking, eating and relaxing areas, as well as a study. A timber deck maximises the expansive and uplifting views.

Background

Four bedrooms and a winter snug are contained within the lower ground floor. Natural and sustainable materials are used throughout, including slate, stone, bath stone render and raw oak cladding. Warmcel recycled newspaper was used to insulate the roofs and walls.

Kingswood Pavilion

September 7, 2016 by Ben Smith

Background

With an expanding need for sports facilities, the existing 1967 Pavilion was struggling to cope and did not reflect Kingswood School’s forward looking green ethos.

Design

We retained the existing building facing the cricket square and built a new state-of-the-art club room on top of four new changing rooms, all set on a different orientation.  The two geometries are resolved by the lift and staircase acting as a pivot and knitting together the old and the new.

Technical

The new club room is constructed out of cross-laminated timber ( CLT) on paired glue laminated frame, expressed internally with stainless steel connections.

September 7, 2016 by Ben Smith

Background

This original stable block designed by Wyatt was saved from demolition by the governors who raised the funds to convert it into a new Arts Centre.

Design

A new contemporary performance space has been slotted into the shell of the original building, with ancillary spaces in the two wagon sheds on either side.

Technical

Daylight floods into the main space which is lined with cedar acoustic panels.  There is also stage lighting and complete blackout facilities for the diverse range of users.
