Background
David and Mary’s ambition was to create a peaceful, long-term home embedded into the landscape. Located approximately three miles from the centre of Bath, Upper Lodge is a contemporary design nestled into Cleeve Hill.
Design
Designed with an inverted layout, placing the main living spaces on the upper floor, tree-like columns support a curved canopy roof that appears to float above the walls below. A level-access balcony extends from the living area, creating a covered outdoor space flowing naturally from inside to out. A glazed opening in the north wall allows views through the house to the trees beyond, connecting the home with its surrounding landscape.
Technical
Upper Lodge has an insulation-first strategy across the walls, roof, and floor, combined with a highly airtight envelope. This holistic approach to sustainability, considering energy, water, materials, and careful design, endeavor to improve environmental performance and support the targets of the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge.
